Richie Madyira
Richie Madyira, born in 1989 in Harare, Zimbabwe, graduated in 2007 from the National Gallery of Zimbabwe School of Visual Art & Design. From a young age, he was frequently confronted with conflicts within his family regarding religion and traditional rituals, which has influenced his views on faith and religion and is often reflected in his colorful, figurative paintings. In his work, Madyira portrays his fellow Zimbabweans, immigrants like himself in South Africa, who are seeking a better life. His paintings showcase the pride and joy they experience when they treat themselves to a bit of luxury after a busy workweek. He aims to provide hope and encourage people to break free from situations that hinder progress.
Madyira currently resides in Cape Town, South Africa, where he works full-time as an artist. He has successfully participated in numerous exhibitions both in South Africa and internationally.
His paintings are character studies, in which he depicts figures against imaginary, idealized, and vividly colored backgrounds. Through the use of vibrant colors and visual storytelling, he addresses themes such as living conditions in impoverished communities, aiming to create happiness and harmony.
Madyira’s work is rooted in his personal experiences and offers an optimistic view of the people of Zimbabwe, South Africa, and the rest of the continent. He hopes his work encourages others to seek better opportunities and a better life.
