About this work
Phulani puts a lot of emphasis on the eyes in all her works because she believes that we are connected to each other with our eyes. She wants to reinforce this by including only little emotion in the face.
Ula was created starting from 5 different photographs. Phulani does not paint a person, but invents a face, with great attention to detail.
She has always loved how Africa celebrated bright, rich colors and how beautifully they were used to portray and tell a story about a specific culture and way of life. Her paintings are her perspective of a beautiful continent and its people and the raw emotion that connects us all.
